Introduction
What happened at our first presential breathing and meditation meeting?Guided by breathing exercises and establishing moments of stillness, we merged into the never-ending golden light of inner peace.
One of the exercises we used was Tummo breathing.
This technique is being used in the Vajrayana (Tantric)Buddhism and has a very close relationship to its bigger brother, the Hindu energy system, as both developed from the Tantric movement, which was very popular across the Indian subcontinent from 600 to 1000 CE.
Both traditions share the fundamental concepts of:
Subtle Body: The use of the internal body map (Chakras/Khorlo, Nadis/Tsa, Vayus/Lung).
Inner Fire: The concept of an internal energy source (Kundalini in Hindu Tantra, Tummo/Chandali in Buddhist Tantra) residing in the lower body.
Transformation: The goal of awakening this energy and driving it up the central channel (Sushumna/Uma) to achieve a profound, blissful, and enlightened state.
The Wisdom of the Fierce Woman (Tummo)
The Meaning of the Name
Tummo is translated literally as “Fierce Woman.” This name describes a potent, passionate, and transformative “psychic heat.” It is not a gentle warmth; it is a fierce energy that resides at your navel, ready to incinerate the mental fog and emotional blockages that keep you from your true self.
Origins and Use
Stemming from the Six Yogas of Naropa (11th Century), Tummo was developed by Tibetan masters as a spiritual “accelerant.” While it allowed monks to survive the freezing Himalayan heights, its primary use is to melt the “frozen” aspects of our consciousness, allowing our inner light to flow freely through the central channel.
The Bridge and Disclaimer
As a bridge between ancient tradition and modern need, I share these tools for those who feel the “call from inside.”
- A Sacred Practice: Traditionally, Tummo is a restricted practice involving complex visualisations of deities and syllables.
- Safety Awareness: Forceful breathing can cause “Lung” (wind) imbalances if done without care. If you feel dizzy or anxious, stop and return to natural breathing.
- Intent: We use the somatic power of the breath here to clear “modern overwhelm,” acknowledging that the full spiritual path is a deeper, lifelong commitment.
The Practice
We will move through two rounds of active breathing to ignite the “Fierce Woman” within, followed by a visualisation to find our stillness.
Round 1
- Vase Breathing: Take 18–21 rhythmic breaths. Inhale deeply into the belly (expanding it like a vase), and exhale fully. You can exaggerate a backwards movement with your arms and shoulders as you inhale to really open up your space
- The Retention: After the final exhale, take one deep inhale and hold your breath for 30 seconds.
- The Root Lock: While holding, gently contract your pelvic floor. This seals the energy at your base, forcing the heat to rise toward your navel.
Round 2
- Vase Breathing: Repeat the 27–30 rhythmic breaths.
- The Retention: Inhale deeply and hold for 30 to 45 seconds.
- The Root Lock: Re-engage the pelvic floor. Feel the pressure building—this is the “little crack” letting the light in.
The Meditation
Release the hold and let your breath become effortless.
- Visualise: See a tiny, incredibly bright flame at your navel—the Fierce Woman.
- The Heat: Feel her heat rising up your spine, “ripping the boundaries apart” as it reaches your heart and head.
- Arrival: Let the fire subside into a golden glow. Stay here in the silence. When stillness is reached, you have arrived.
